Day 9: Cartago, La Basilica de los Ángeles, Cartago v. Limon pro game

Watching Liverpool v. Manchester United this morning on Kyle Douglas' computer

The bus ride to Cartago

La Basílica de los Ángeles de Cartago. Many "Ticos" (Costa Ricans) make an annual pilgrimage by foot called the "Romería¨ to this incredible church. We even saw people walking on their knees down the aisle toward the sanctuary which holds an amazing alter containing ¨La Negrita.¨

At the soccer Fello Meza stadium in Cartago…great view of the pitch!

The home team, Cartago, went down 1-0 when Limón converted a penalty kick early in the second half.

Cartago responded when fan favorite, ¨Chi Chi¨, scored in the run of play with 20 minutes remaining in the match.

LC soccer players (in Costa Rican national team jerseys) watch as the goal keeper for Limon takes a goal kick. The match ended in a 1-1 draw but it was incredibly exciting!

On our ninth day in Costa Rica, we awoke to a relaxing morning watching the Manchester-United vs. Liverpool game.  Many of the athletes were up early to support their favorite teams.  After the game we returned to familiar card games like BS and Kemps to further build our team chemistry.  Exhausted from the many games earlier in the trip, many of the players sought solitude in their rooms for a midday nap before our 2 pm departure via el autobús to Cartago.  Upon arrival to the Basilica de Los Angeles all of the athletes were in awe.  The beauty of the church, combined with its cultural history, was astounding, and several of us took the opportunity to pray at the most famous church in the country.  Immediately afterward, we found ourselves conversing with locals in line for the fountain of holy water where they could toss coins to incite good luck and blessings.  Slightly delayed by the lengthy line for the fountain, we boarded the bus once again and headed to the Fello Meza Stadium to watch the Cartagan team face off against Limón.  The stadium was packed with passionate and slightly rowdy fans who received police escorts out of the stadium on multiple occasions.  Luckily, our seats were several sections away from the quarrels and police interventions.  We quickly came to recognize the utter importance of soccer in the lives of many Costa Rican locals as their deafening cheers echoed throughout the stadium.  At around the 60 minute mark, many of the LC boys joined the crowd of fans behind the net of the opposing team to offer their support for the Cartagans.  A red card was awarded to the home team late in the game to the dismay of the fans.  The game ended in a 1-1 draw despite many close scoring opportunities for the home team and the ardent support of all the fans as well as the LC pelicans.  As the sun set and the full moon arose, the LC team returned to our hotel in Coronado and received a less on in macroeconomics delivered by Coach Murphy. With only one full day remaining of our trip, the players would like to thank Coach Bour, Coach Hutch, Coach Murphy, Coach Esper, the Fútbol Consultants organization, and all of our parents for helping to coordinate and send us on this incredible experience.  This trip has created many life-long memories and brought the team together on an entirely new level.  Although some of us will graduate this year, and some of us have not yet played for the varsity team, all of us have bonded over the game of soccer and its passion all around the world.

Lunch again at the ¨Molino Cenral¨.

It was long and exciting day for the LC soccer squad. We began the day teaching local children to play soccer in the "vecindario" (neighborhood) of Curridabat, where the kids were eager to expand their knowledge of the game. While we enjoyed playing soccer with the younger ones, the best was yet to come. Soon after our morning session with the children, we faced the local academy team of Curridabat. The game ended in a great result for the Pelicans. After going down 1-0 early in the game, we were awarded a penalty kick in the dying minutes of the first half. Richard Ochifije ’15 sought redemption after his most recent penalty, and he smacked the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, leaving the score tied 1-1. The second half began very well for the Pelicans. Shortly into the half, Ochifije flicked an incoming goal kick with the top of his head, creating a breakaway opportunity for forward Aaron Dang ‘17 to finish the ball, making the score 2-1 for the Pelicans.
Later in the day we had the opportunity to attend the opening ceremony and first match of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. As we entered the stadium, we sensed Costa Rica’s great passion for soccer. Though the Costa Rican team lost 3-0, they fought hard against the talented Venezuelan squad until the very last minute. The atmosphere was phenomenal and the boys will remember an unforgettable experience.

Day 7: Zip-lining in San Luis, and souvenirs in Sarchi

The team is ready for Zip-lining!

The side awoke to the ominous barking of Coach Bour.  We started our day with a short and sweet practice that consisted of calisthenics and stretching. From there, we took a three-hour ride to rural and stunning San Luis. Upon arriving, the boys began their attempts to convince Eric Sze, Figbe Prosper, and Richard Ochefije to participate in the day’s activities. Zip lining enabled the group to face their fears as a team. The course consisted of 12 lines and a Tarzan jump.  One of the highlights was Paulos Aklilu overcoming his fear of heights and conquering the Tarzan jump.  The group’s favorite line was the grand finale.  During the last ride each of us went in the superman position and flew across the top of the secondary growth forest for a ride that lasted a whole minute. Figbe looked back on the experience saying, “In that moment, I thought about my parents. And I wondered if this is the way they were going to lose me?” Figbe, Richard, Eric and many others overcame tremendous fear today, and we all became closer as a team.

Day 6: Lincoln School match & trip to the mall

Enjoying some time to relax this morning before heading out to our match

Card games are king…and queen during social time

At the Lincoln School in Heredia, both teams shake hands before the match

Post match photo, LC battled but the Lincoln School won the day 3-2. The facilities were excellent and the ball moved swiftly all game.

Found a good spot to reflect during our trip to Lincoln Mall in Moravia. The mall is actually located on the grounds where the old Lincoln School campus used to be!

Coach Hutchinson enjoys a Starbucks coffee. When the barista asked for his name, she wrote "Joch" on the cup. The Coach Hutch proceeded to say, "Tú sabes me¨ (Tú me conoces - You know me) in a sincere, and hilarious response. Love it!

Having recovered from the laborious match against the Costa Rica U17 National team, the Pelicans rose early for a short but intense training session in preparation for the clash with the Lincoln School, a Costa Rica based American school. Despite our best efforts from both Prosper Figbe and Kyle Douglas’ goals, the match ended 3-2 in the favor of the talented Lincoln School. After the match, we got to replenish and relax as we spent our evening in the Lincoln Plaza Mall. We were schocked as we discovered American restaurants such as McDonalds, KFC, and Popeyes in the mall. Such establishments are only seen in the urban Valle Central (Central Valley). After the meals and a little shopping, the Pelicans returned to their nests to rest in preparation for zip-lining.
